چکیده
The COPE field campaign operated from the 3rd July to the 20 th August 2013, with ground operations based in Davidstow Cornwall where the X-band polarimetric Doppler radar was located. Figure 1 shows the location of Davidstow, the Chilbolton S-band polarimetric Doppler radar and the C-band radars within the Met Office network. The Met Office Cobbacombe C-band radar was operational although not with Doppler velocity or dual polarization capability, whereas the Predannack C-band radar was not operational during COPE. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the use or benefits of the various polarization parameters produced by the X-band radar.

Quantitative Precipitation Nowcasting (QPN) is one of the main applications of radar observations. On one hand, one of the most used nowcasting algorithms is Lagrangian extrapolation. It shows skill in specifying the timing and location of precipitation over short time periods, but shows low skill when using past precipitation trends to predict changes in precipitation intensity. On the other h...

The melting layer (ML) is a significant phenomenon in weather radar observations. It consists of initially frozen hydrometeors falling into air below the 0C isotherm (freezing level) where they start melting. The radar echoes from melting hydrometeors differ from those from rain droplets as well as from frozen hydrometeors, and ML is observed as the radar bright band. The ML is a complex atmosp...

Recently, the number of unusual extreme weather that causes natural disasters is increasing, and accompanying phenomena such as local heavy rainstorms, tornado, and gust fronts have caused an immediate and often devastating impact on a broad range of human activities. Weather radar has played an important role to survey those meteorological phenomena associated with rainfall and to mitigate mos...

Drop size distribution (DSD) measurements using ground-based disdrometers (point measurements) have often been used to derive equations to relate radar observations to the integral rainfall parameters (Atlas et al. 1999, Bringi et al., 2003, Kozu et al., 2006, Tokay and Short, 1996, Ajayi and Owolabi, 1987, Battan, 1973). Disdrometers such as JWD, MRR and several others have a major limitation ...
